David Altmaier named Florida Insurance Commissioner

It was announced today (April 29) that David Altmaier, Florida’s current Deputy Commissioner, Property & Casualty, has been unanimously approved by the Florida Cabinet for the position of Insurance Commissioner of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.

Current Commissioner Kevin McCarty has served as Florida’s chief insurance regulator for over ten years.  He will remain in office to facilitate the transition for an additional for 60 days past the previously announced resignation to have been effective May 2 .

Altmaier has worked for the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) for five years.  Prior to joining the OIR, he worked as a licensed agent and high school math teacher.  During his tenure at the OIR Altmaier has had a progression of responsible jobs in Property & Casualty Financial Oversight.  He started as an Insurance Examiner II, became a Reinsurance/Financial Specialist, progressed to Financial Examiner/Analyst Supervisor, followed by Chief Analyst, and lastly Director of Property and Casualty Financial Oversight before becoming Deputy Commissioner over a year ago.
