Kathleen Birrane appointed as the Maryland Insurance Commissioner

Kathleen Birrane, a partner at DLA Piper Global Law Firm, has
been appointed as the next commissioner of the Maryland Insurance
Administration by Gov. Larry Hogan. She will succeed Al Redmer, who will become
Executive Director of the Maryland Auto Insurance Fund.

According to DLA Piper, she advises insurers on complex regulatory compliance matters, insurance product and program design, licensing, rating and underwriting, criminal and regulatory investigations related to the conduct of the business of insurance, and issues related to external data sources and predictive modeling.  Her practice also includes the representation of state insurance regulators in their capacity as receivers or rehabilitators of insolvent insurance companies in connection with complex jurisdictional and commercial issues and related litigation.

Al Redmer will be missed by us but we welcome Kathleen Birrane.  Commissioner Redmer will take over the leadership of the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (MAIF).  Founded in 1957 by the Maryland General Assembly. The Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund sells automobile liability insurance to Marylanders who are unable to obtain it privately. To be eligible for insurance from the Fund, a driver must have been rejected by at least two private insurers or have had automobile insurance cancelled or not renewed for any reason other than nonpayment of premiums. We wish all our best to Commissioner Redmer in this new challenge.
